Selected Committee reports to Cabinet on Daylight Saving Time.

Cabinet has approved the report by the Committee that was appointed to assess possible benefits to instituting Daylight Saving Time for Samoa.

The report states that Daylight Saving Time is a convention of advancing clocks so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically, clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring for the southern hemisphere and are adjusted backward in autumn.

As stated in the report, daylight saving time in Samoa will have significant benefits to the Country, like: promoting energy conservation; increasing opportunities for leisure; enhances public health and safety; and economic growth.

Cabinet has approved: Daylight saving time in Samoa; commencing first Sunday of October 2009 until the last Sunday of March 2010; legislation to be drafted by the Office of the Attorney General; and Labour Department to Implement and to monitor this program.

Daylight saving time for Samoa is a response to the need for national strategies to address the current worldwide crises in fuel and food price increase.
