Time zone proposal sent to committee with great support

All parties support Naleraq's and Siumut's proposal to change the time zone with effect from October next year. The proposal has been sent to the relevant committee for further consideration before it is secondly considered in Inatsisartut.

The time zone is often debated in Inatsisartut. All parties support the proposal that Greenland should return to the original time zone of UTC-3. The proposal is now forwarded to a committee for further consideration.

Proposals to change the time zone and abolish daylight saving time, submitted by Naleraq and Siumut in their respective forms, have been sent to the relevant committee for further consideration before the proposal is considered a second time in Inatsisartut on November 6.

Yesterday's debate in Inatsisartut showed that all parties support the proposal that Greenland's time zone should be changed back to UTC-3 and that daylight saving time should be abolished.

The time zone transitioned to UTC-2 in October 2023. However, the change has met with criticism due to darker mornings and brighter afternoons, especially during the winter periods.

The Chairman of Naalakkersuisoq Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D), had emphasized in his response note that there was otherwise agreement in Inatsisartut regarding the change of time zone in 2023, but notes that the mood has changed since:

- Inatsisartut determined the time zone by consensus, but despite our agreement at the time, there are now divided opinions about determining the time zone, which is also reflected in the two proposals presented. There are both citizens and business actors who describe different needs and preferences, said Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

However, the Government of Greenland would rather wait for the EU to abolish daylight saving time:

- In this connection, it should be emphasized that the current Greenland Government, like the previous Greenland Government, is in favor of abolishing summer time in Greenland at the same time as this happens in the EU. In 2019, the EU Parliament backed a proposal from the Commission to abolish summer time with a more than 2/3 majority. The implementation of the decision is taking time, as EU countries have different wishes for this legislation. It is therefore unknown when the abolition will be implemented in Europe.
