Sonjica suggests another look at daylight saving

SOUTH Africa may introduce daylight saving, Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica told the National Assembly last week.

She said that the department of public enterprises had asked Eskom to conduct a study into daylight saving. If the method is recommended by Eskom, it should be introduced and “the current situation may be reconsidered”.

The study, she said, would take into account potential socio-economic impacts nationally and provide a cost-benefit analysis, which was expected to be completed by June. A study had already been conducted on daylight saving in 1986 by the CSIR, she said, and Eskom had done one in 2006.

Said Sonjica: “The conclusions of the studies was that there would not be any significant impact on the energy consumption, either in the reduction of the peak demand or reduction of the base-load power.”

However, she said, it had been accepted that these studies were now outdated and it was necessary to conduct a fresh investigation.
